Preliminary Design and Validation of a 3D-Printed Continuously Variable Transmission for an Electric Vehicle Prototype

This article discusses the progress made in developing a new 3D-printed continuously variable transmission (CVT) for an electric vehicle (EV) prototype competing Shell Eco-marathon battery category, global energy efficiency competition sponsored by Shell. The proposed system is composed of polymeric conic gear assembled motor axle and directly coupled to rear tire vehicle. conical shape allows implement continuous variation diameter contact with tire. was mounted over board linear bearings, allowing speed ratio change moving laterally. A 3D-printing slicing software optimization algorithm plug-in used determine best printing parameters based on tangential force, maximum displacement safety factor. When compared original part 100% infill density, optimized solution reduced component mass about 12% while maintaining safe mechanical resistance stiffness.
